The NBA draft lottery may seem like a strange spectacle, but it could impact the future of the franchise for years to come. And this year we have a special offer. The winner will have the right to choose France’s Victor Wenbanyama, who is predicted to be a game-changing superstar.
When, where and how can I watch the draw? The lottery will take place on Tuesday at 8:00 pm Chicago Eastern Time. ESPN will broadcast the event. You can also expect to find the news quickly on social media as fans celebrate and lament the outcome.
Who is in the lottery this year? The 14 teams that did not make the playoffs will qualify. This includes four teams that made it to the play-in games but didn’t make it to the official playoffs.
However, it’s a little more complicated than that. Past trades have resulted in the Dallas Mavericks handing the pick to the Knicks unless they finish in the Top 10, and the Chicago Bulls handing the pick to the Orlando Magic unless they finish in the Top 4.
How does it work? A random draw will be held to determine the top four draft picks, with the weaker team having a better chance. Picks 5 through 14 are assigned in reverse order of team records.
Who has the best chance of getting the No. 1 pick? The three worst teams in the regular season, the Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs, each have a 14% chance of winning the top pick.
Who else has a chance to be number 1? The chances for the rest of the teams dwindle, from the Charlotte Hornets with a 13 percent chance to the New Orleans Pelicans with a regular-season winning record and just a 0.5 percent chance of a top pick. The rest of the teams with a chance are the Blazers at 11 percent, the Magic at 9, the Pacers at 7, the Wizards at 7, the Jazz at 5, the Mavericks at 3, the Bulls at 2, the Thunder at 2, and the Raptors at 1 (numbers rounded to percent).
What about 15th through 30th? All of this is in place, starting with the Hawks, the worst-performing playoff team in 15th place, and moving down picks to better teams.
Is it the real lottery that you see on TV? No, what you are seeing is more of a ceremonial unveiling of the draft order. The actual draw will take place shortly before, in front of several leagues, teams and press in isolation in a separate room.
I read that the lottery was won. TRUE? Conspiracy theorists argue that the league is modifying the lottery to benefit big-market teams, especially the first lottery in 1985, when the Knicks won the right to pick Patrick Ewing. Sometimes.

He won’t turn 20 until January, but he should have a lot of upside.
Unusually, prospectors who think hard about the draft are beginning to agree on picks two through four. They’re likely guard Scoot Henderson, who averaged 17 points per game for the G League Ignites. Forward Brandon Miller of the University of Alabama. and guard Armen Thompson, who played for the overtime elite City Reapers.
But things could change depending on which team wins which pick, and the stock could go up or down over the next month.
What about Purdue’s Zach Eady, college player of the year? Despite having a great season, Edie isn’t held in high esteem by NBA scouts. At 7-foot-4, he looks like his quintessential NBA center, but his inability to score from the outside makes him seem unfit for the modern game. He might go somewhere in the second round.
When my team gets the top pick, we’re all set, right? With players like Tim Duncan, LeBron James and Anthony Davis all finishing first, Wenbanyama is a sure bet.
But Greg Oden, Anthony Bennett and Ben Simmons all finished first, too, which was a humbling reminder not to start counting championships just yet.
